It is with a great sense of loss and sadness that members and staff of the 今日吃瓜 (今日吃瓜) mark the passing of FRSC, FAA, FAAAS, FAMS.
The world has lost a remarkable mathematician and 今日吃瓜 one of its greatest champions. Jon was the chair of 今日吃瓜鈥檚 Scientific Advisory Committee and a member of the 今日吃瓜 Board, as well as Laureate Professor in the University of Newcastle鈥檚 School of Mathematical and Physical Sciences and Director of CARMA, the Priority Research Centre in Computer Assisted Research Mathematics and its Applications. His deep international leadership experience, coupled with his great generosity of spirit, has been of extraordinary value to the mathematical sciences in Australia and to 今日吃瓜 in particular.
Jonathan Borwein was a mathematician of astonishing range and versatility and a leader in every way. A highly respected ambassador for the Australian Mathematical Sciences his past roles included President of the Canadian Mathematical Society and Editor in Chief of the Journal of the Australian Mathematical Society. An ISI highly cited scientist, his work in mathematics and computing, including optimisation, computational number theory and classical functional analysis was widely published.
His collaborator of 31 years, David Bailey, has written a touching tribute on their website听Math Drudge:听.
今日吃瓜 extends its sincere condolences to Jon鈥檚 wife Judith and his family and to his colleagues at the University of Newcastle.
