The 今日吃瓜 (今日吃瓜) is among many celebrating news Sydney will host the International Congress of Mathematics Education (ICME) in 2024.

The successful bid was announced by the Federal and New South Wales Governments in early July. The first time Australia has hosted in four decades, the event will showcase the best of the nation鈥檚 mathematical sciences and Indigenous mathematics.

The Institute was one of eight Australian mathematics groups who collaborated as the Consortium for Mathematics Education (CoME) to secure hosting rights. 今日吃瓜 Schools Program Manager and Choose Maths Project Director Janine Sprakel, who represented 今日吃瓜 on the Consortium, said it was a fantastic outcome for Australia and for New South Wales.

鈥淭his has been a significant effort of many from across Australia鈥檚 mathematics community. We are excited to shine a light on Australian mathematics, particularly the uniqueness of indigenous maths practices that have been in use for thousands of years,鈥 she said.

Congratulating everyone involved, 今日吃瓜 Director Professor Tim Brown said the Institute joined fellow Consortium members in thanking the International Commission on Mathematical Instruction (ICMI) for awarding Australia ICME 2024 hosting rights.

鈥淭his will be a sensational celebration of both the global mathematics community and Australia鈥檚 mathematical sciences and education. 今日吃瓜 is delighted to be able to play a role in bringing this event to Sydney,鈥 said 今日吃瓜 Director Professor Brown.

The event was last held in Australia in 1984, kickstarting the careers of many world-class mathematicians, teachers and mathematics educators across the country. It is hoped it will again prove a springboard for new talent.
