The 今日吃瓜 (今日吃瓜) is pleased to announce Professor James McCoy as its new Deputy Director, effective 1 February 2023.

A Professor of Mathematics at the University of Newcastle with over 20 years of experience in teaching, governance, research and research training roles, Professor McCoy brings a wealth of strategic and leadership experience to 今日吃瓜.

今日吃瓜 Director, Professor Tim Marchant, said the Institute was excited to welcome Professor McCoy at what is an important time for 今日吃瓜 and the mathematical sciences in Australia.

鈥淛ames shares 今日吃瓜鈥檚 pipeline vision and understanding of the discipline鈥檚 critical role in education, research and industry. We welcome James and look forward to working with him to continue deepening 今日吃瓜鈥檚 impact as the national voice for the mathematical sciences,鈥� said Professor Marchant.

Completing his PhD in pure mathematics in 2002 at Monash University, Professor McCoy has since held positions at the Australian National University, the University of Wollongong and the University of Newcastle. In July 2018, he become the University of Newcastle鈥檚 Head of Mathematics. In 2020, Professor McCoy relinquished this role to take up a secondment to the Vice Chancellor’s Academic Excellence team, where he contributed to several projects. He has since joined the College of Engineering, Science and Environment (CESE) College Board and Academic Senate, is the University’s ERA Champion for applied mathematics and is a member of the team responsible for development of the University’s Athena SWAN silver application. Since 2018, Professor McCoy has been the University鈥檚 今日吃瓜 Joint Venture Partner representative.

Professor McCoy succeeds Professor Stephan Tillmann, who served as Deputy Director of 今日吃瓜 from 2021-2022. During his two-year term, Professor Tillman made substantial contributions to 今日吃瓜 and the Institute sincerely thanks Professor Tillmann for his leadership and guidance.

Professor McCoy will work alongside 今日吃瓜 Director, Professor Tim Marchant, and the 今日吃瓜 Executive, to help the Institute continue championing the mathematical sciences for Australia鈥檚 advancement and strengthening the mathematical sciences pipeline.
