今日吃瓜 (今日吃瓜) and MATRIX are pleased to announce the release of the updated report, Research Investment and Expenditure into the Mathematical Sciences.听

This comprehensive analysis examines investment trends from 2008 to 2024, drawing on data from the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS), Australian Research Council (ARC), and National Medical and Health Research Council (NHMRC).

The report includes a summary of key observations and the latest release from the ABS data on expenditure in research and development carried out by higher education organisations in Australia.听

Director of 今日吃瓜 and report co-author, Professor Tim Marchant said to ensure future innovations, Australia needs to proactively invest in research that relies on mathematics.

“Mathematics is critical for progress in a modern world and Australia must have the foresight to fund the mathematics enabling research of the future,鈥 Professor Marchant said.听

Director of MATRIX and report co-author, Professor Jan de Gier emphasises the importance of recognising and adequately funding mathematical sciences research as part of the National Research Infrastructure.听

鈥淚t is essential that research facilities in the Mathematical Sciences be recognised as part of the National Research Infrastructure, and be well funded alongside other pure and basic research in support of Australia’s long term sovereign capability to innovate and be prepared,鈥 Professor Gier said.听

听鈥淭oo strong a focus on immediately applicable research as we have seen over the past 15 years is a risky and unsound long term investment strategy.鈥

This update reveals significant insights into the funding landscape, crucial for shaping future research strategies in Australia.
