Australian Team Ranks Third for Second Year in a Row at 2023 European Girls Mathematical Olympiad /2023/04/28/australian-team-ranks-third-second-year-in-a-row-at-2023-european-girls-mathematical-olympiad/ Fri, 28 Apr 2023 07:45:44 +0000 /?p=13751 For the second consecutive year, the Australian team has ranked third overall in the 2023 European Girls’ Mathematical Olympiad (EGMO). In a competition between 55 participating countries, the Australian team of four brought home three Gold Medals and one Silver Medal, with one team member, Laura Nan, achieving a perfect score.

The full list of team members and their achievements are as follows:

  • Eunsu Choi, Brisbane State School, QLD – Year 12, Silver Medal (individual rank: 27)
  • Laura Nan, Fintona Girls’ School, VIC – Year 10, Gold Medal (individual rank: 1 – perfect score)
  • Cloris Xu, Baulkham Hills High School, NSW – Year 11, Gold Medal (individual rank: 18)
  • Iris Xu, Baulkham Hills High School, NSW – Year 11, Gold Medal (individual rank: 18)

This year’s team was selected and supported through the Australia Maths Trust^s (AMT’s) Olympiad program. Funded by the Department of Industry, Science and Resources through the Inspiring Australia – Science Engagement Programme, the EGMO program is also supported by Optiver, the Trust’s National Sponsor of the Australian Informatics and Mathematical Olympiad programs.

“Providing opportunities for young women to extend their knowledge and skills in mathematics is a key area of focus for the Trust. Our sustained success in identifying, training and supporting these remarkable young women to compete on the international stage is one way in which we contribute to the future expansion and diversity of mathematical thought and leadership in Australia,” said Nathan Ford, CEO, Australian Maths Trust.

Having already attained such great achievements in high school, the members in the Australian team such as Eunsu Choi and Cloris Xu have begun planning ahead, hoping to apply their mathematical skills in the future to solve real-world problems like climate change.

With the never-ending goal of encouraging diversity in mathematics, the consistent success in the EGMO shows that the AMT Olympiad program is on the right track in improving Australia^s mathematical sciences, especially at an early level.

The 2023 European Girls^ Mathematical Olympiad (EGMO) took place in Slovenia from 13-19th April 2023. This is the sixth year that Australia was represented at EGMO. Since 2018, Australian EGMO teams have placed: 20th, 14th, 12th, 12th, 3rd, and 3rd respectively.

This research program, titled: Women in Geometry, Analysis and Topology, is led by Julie Clutterbuck (Monash University), Melissa Tacy (University of Auckland) and Vanessa Robins (The Australian National University).

The program is a week-long meeting to foster new local collaborations, deepen existing ones, and above all create space and time for women to get research done.

Research projects of focus include:
鈥 High frequency harmonic analysis
鈥 Quasiconcavity for elliptic equations on manifolds
鈥 Computational topology
鈥 Welded tangles
鈥 Dynamical systems and symmetry groups
