MATRIX, Creswick – 今日吃瓜 I Championing Mathematical Sciences for Australia鈥檚 Advancement 今日吃瓜 Wed, 29 Jul 2026 02:31:58 +0000 en-US hourly 1 https://wordpress.org/?v=5.8.17 /wp-content/uploads/2015/11/cropped-今日吃瓜_icon-32x32.png MATRIX, Creswick – 今日吃瓜 I Championing Mathematical Sciences for Australia鈥檚 Advancement 32 32 Algebraic and geometric methods in four dimensions /events/event/algebraic-and-geometric-methods-in-four-dimensions/ Wed, 29 Jul 2026 02:05:40 +0000 /?post_type=event&p=17621 This workshop will focus on the geometric and algebraic topology of manifolds. The qualitative behaviour of manifolds varies significantly with their dimension. In a sense, dimension four is the boundary case between low and high dimensions; there is enough freedom for the manifold topology to exhibit complex behaviour, but not enough room for the usual high dimensional tools to work. In particular, there is an astonishing divergence between the smooth and topological settings for 4-manifolds. Moreover, deep questions such as the Poincare conjecture and the Schoenflies conjecture remain open in dimension four.

Recent years have seen a resurgence of interest in 4-dimensional manifolds, both on the topological side using techniques pioneered by Freedman and Quinn, as well as on the smooth side due to Gabai’s 4-dimensional light bulb theorem and Watanabe’s disproof of the 4-dimensional Smale conjecture. Notably this progress can be seen as the result of inspiration drawn both from research on 3-manifolds, including knots and links, as well as on higher-dimensional manifolds. With a new generation of researchers focusing their interest on this area, the time is ripe for new developments.

The aim of this workshop is to bring together junior and senior researchers in 4-manifolds, as well as the neighbouring fields of 3-manifolds and higher-dimensional manifolds, stimulating further collaboration on fundamental questions. In particular, we hope to strengthen the ties between the Australian and international research communities.

MATRIX Workshop on Modelling and Inference for Cellular Systems /events/event/matrix-workshop-on-modelling-and-inference-for-cellular-systems/ Wed, 29 Jul 2026 02:11:57 +0000 /?post_type=event&p=17616 This workshop will bring together international and Australian researchers to advance mathematical and computational methods for modelling and inference in cellular systems. The program is motivated by the growing need for rigorous mathematical frameworks to understand the complexity of life at the cellular level 鈥 problems which are at the heart of MACSYS鈥檚 research goals. We also hope to use this opportunity to strengthen collaborative ties between the mathematical biology community industry partners.

The program is designed to foster interdisciplinary collaboration. It will be problem-focussed with short research talks followed by collaborative sessions to work on real problems in mathematical and systems biology proposed by MACSYS members and partners. MACSYS aims for the workshop to spark new collaborative relationships and kickstart exciting new collaborative research projects.

Mathematics of Metamaterials /events/event/mathematics-of-metamaterials/ Wed, 01 Jul 2026 01:34:35 +0000 /?post_type=event&p=17622 Metamaterials are engineered structures that achieve responses not possible with conventional materials. They are the basis of many potentially transformative technological advances. The design of metamaterials poses signi铿乧ant mathematical challenges, due to their multiscale physical properties and their resonant microstructures. The MATRIX workshop is a major opportunity for the rapidly growing community of Australian researchers working on metamaterials to interact with senior and emerging experts from the international community at the cutting edge of the mathematics of metamaterials. Participants have been secured from major international research groups in the UK, Europe and USA, who will be able to share the latest trends in the mathematics of metamaterials, and provide advice on interdisciplinary collaborations and interacting with industry.
