In Brief – Maths Anxiety: Students, Pre- and In-Service Teachers /?publications=in-brief-maths-anxiety-students-pre-and-in-service-teachers Mon, 14 Jan 2019 01:22:08 +0000 /?post_type=publications&p=7470 Maths anxiety, which starts in early primary school, has been shown to be an impediment to achievement, and female primary teachers with maths anxiety are likely 鈥榗auses鈥 affecting behaviour and attitudes especially of female primary students. This report reviews and examines likely causes of the lower interest, participation and achievement of girls and young women in mathematics: maths anxiety and lower confidence in the mathematical abilities of female students and primary teachers. An analysis of survey data from primary teachers in Australia鈥檚 Choose Maths schools shows evidence of maths anxiety and perceived inadequate pre-service training among primary teachers, as well as evidence that change in improving teachers鈥 mathematical skill base and reducing their maths anxiety is possible through suitable intervention (Executive summary of the full report).

Pre- and post surveys taken among participants in Choose Maths Days at universities show these events have given participants a more positive view of mathematics than before. Around 60% of the students said that the university Choose Maths Days had influenced the level of mathematics they wished to take in Year 11/12, with a quarter of students explicitly stating that they now want to take a higher level of mathematics than they had previously decided upon (Executive summary of the full report).
