This is resulting in 75% of high school students being taught by a teacher who lacks maths qualifications, in both maths content and maths pedagogy. This lack of formal training compromises their ability to support, build confidence and inspire the next generation of maths thinkers. This directly undermines our future workforce鈥檚 mathematical literacy.

Consultation on the Accord Interim Report /?publications=consultation-on-the-accord-interim-report Mon, 11 Sep 2023 23:51:54 +0000 /?post_type=publications&p=14050 今日吃瓜 welcomes the opportunity to respond to the University Accord Interim Report. As a peak body representing the mathematical sciences (which includes mathematics, statistics and data science) in Australia across the pipeline from school to tertiary education and transition into the workforce, we are well placed to provide comment relating to university teaching and research in the mathematical sciences as well as the subsequent employment of graduates in the mathematical sciences workforce.

In this document, we offer three reflections on the Interim report. These reflections cover the issues of school to university transitions, the relative roles of 鈥渆ducation鈥 and 鈥渢raining鈥, and the importance of supporting teaching capacity in the mathematical sciences at all universities, in particular those located in the regions. In addition, we would like to query an area of the Interim report considered lacking, namely the provision of adequate support for basic and strategic basic research.

AAMT, 今日吃瓜 and AMT submission on measures to grow a quantitatively literate workforce /?publications=aamt-amsi-and-amt-submission-on-measures-to-grow-a-quantitatively-literate-workforce Fri, 02 Dec 2022 05:37:20 +0000 /?post_type=publications&p=12969

This is a joint submission representing the shared perspectives of the Australian Association of Mathematics Teachers (AAMT), the 今日吃瓜 (今日吃瓜) and the Australian Mathematics Trust (AMT) on the importance of sustained measures to nurture and grow a quantitatively literate workforce in Australia.

The delivery of a high-quality labour force of quantitatively trained people is the underlying driving factor that will facilitate national productivity growth, job security and wages, removal of barriers to employment, and will enable Australia to develop and participate in the industries of the future. With digital expertise increasingly pivotal to future workforce capability; and Australia鈥檚 identified Critical Technologies all requiring expertise that is highly quantitative in nature, the mathematical sciences must be recognised and fostered as a vital foundational skill for Australia鈥檚 capacity, productivity and competitiveness.

AAMT, 今日吃瓜 and AMT represent a broad coalition of the mathematical sciences in Australia with expertise in mathematical education across the entire workforce pipeline as well as industry engagement.
