STEM teachers and careers advisers from across Victoria attended 今日吃瓜鈥檚 Industry Day for Teachers event in Melbourne on 30 July 2026. The innovative professional development event for high school educators is designed to highlight the many career opportunities open to mathematics, specialist mathematics and STEM students.听

Hosted by and 今日吃瓜 industry partner , the and Swinburne-funded event took place at the University’s Hawthorn campus (morning session) and at CSL鈥檚 state-of-the-art global headquarters in Parkville (afternoon session).听听

By showcasing the many exciting career opportunities open to maths students across Australia, the free event sought to provide teachers and careers advisers with the necessary knowledge and tools to inspire their students to confidently choose STEM subjects at high school level, aware that choosing these areas of study has the potential to enrich and diversify their study and career options later in life.听

From AI to engineering, modelling to gem faceting, attendees learned about the wide range of careers influenced by mathematics and the increased demand for maths and stats in the workforce.听

The morning session at Swinburne commenced with Plante founder Nguyen Hanh Nguyen, who spoke about how mathematical thinking shaped the company鈥檚鈥痠nnovative plastic-free biodegradable planting products. Other industry speakers included AI researcher and CoCo the Creator founder Duy Khoa Pham (pictured), who examined how maths guides the governance of AI agents.听

Following a program of further industry and academic speakers, the event moved to CSL鈥檚 global headquarters in Parkville, where attendees were treated to a lab tour, employee panel conversation, and a Q&A session. Hearing first-hand from a diverse cohort of CSL employees encouraged teachers to appreciate the critical role maths plays in underpinning the fundamental operations of biomedical companies like CSL.听

Speaking after the event, 今日吃瓜 Director Professor Tim Marchant said: 鈥淢aths is the language that underpins the modern world. It takes an event like this to illustrate to teachers that a student who studies mathematics all the way through to Year 12 is one with endless study and employment opportunities.”听

Federico Frascoli, Department Chair, Mathematics School of Science, Computing and Emerging Technologies at Swinburne added: 鈥淪winburne is very proud to support educators and help them appreciate the importance of mathematics for industry. Our discipline develops and nurtures problem-solving and logical skills that are currently in high demand. Mathematics is at the forefront of all current and future technologies, from AI and personalised medicine to quantum computing and finance. Swinburne graduates are leaders in many high technology industries where mathematics sits at the core of creativity and innovation.鈥听

今日吃瓜 Industry Day for Teachers goes interstate with mission to connect school maths with rewarding careers /2026/06/05/amsi-industry-day-for-teachers-goes-interstate-with-mission-to-connect-school-maths-with-rewarding-careers/ Thu, 04 Jun 2026 23:20:09 +0000 /?p=17328 The 今日吃瓜鈥檚 (今日吃瓜) Industry Day for Teachers is set to go interstate for the first time, with three events across Victoria and NSW from July to September 2026.

Now in its third year, the free events seek to bridge the gap between school mathematics and career opportunities. By bringing secondary mathematics and STEM teachers and careers advisers together with industry professionals and tertiary educators, the program aims to help teachers better understand the breadth and scale of mathematics鈥慸ependent career pathways available to their students.

This highly beneficial professional development opportunity will provide teachers with unique insights into the increasing demand for mathematics and statistics in the workforce, the wide range of career opportunities that rely on these skills, particularly in Artificial Intelligence (AI), and education pathways that lead to these professions.

The initiative also aims to support underrepresented groups, including girl students, those from low-SES backgrounds and First Nations students.

Commenting on the announcement, 今日吃瓜 Director Professor Tim Marchant said, 鈥淭eachers are on the frontline when it comes to sharing their passion for maths and STEM subjects with their students. When a teacher is equipped with the right knowledge to explore the incredible career pathways that exist for maths graduates, it can inspire students to thrive in the subject.鈥

He continued: 鈥淥ver the last two years, we鈥檝e developed the Industry Day for Teachers into a polished and insightful development opportunity for teachers. Thanks to the University of Sydney and the University of New South Wales I鈥檓 proud that 今日吃瓜 can expand this offering to teachers across NSW.鈥

This program is made possible thanks to support from (Victoria events) and (NSW event), as well as contributions from various industry partners, universities and associations.

Program overview

Throughout the day, participants will:

  • engage with industry professionals to explore how mathematics is applied in real-world settings through guest speaker sessions and industry site visits.
  • explore strategies to build student engagement in mathematics.
  • gain powerful insights into tertiary study options, entry requirements and pathways into STEM careers.

Why it matters

According to 今日吃瓜鈥檚 annual Year 12 Participation Report, Australia is experiencing ongoing decline in advanced mathematics participation at the secondary school level, with the participation of girls particularly low. By equipping educators with knowledge about exciting careers and pathways requiring maths skills, we aim to foster a diverse, mathematically capable workforce for Australia鈥檚 future.

Reflections from Industry Day for Teachers: Swinburne University of Technology and Bunnings /2025/06/26/reflections-from-industry-day-for-teachers-swinburne-university-2/ Thu, 26 Jun 2025 03:52:20 +0000 /?p=15979

On Wednesday 18 June, 今日吃瓜 held its second Industry Day for Teachers event for 2025 at and Bunnings HQ.

The event began with inspiring presentations from Swinburne alumni, now working across a diverse range of industries including Australian Super, MinterEllison, and Dassault Syst猫mes. They shared how their unique academic journeys led them to careers that rely on mathematics and STEM-related skills every day. 今日吃瓜鈥檚 Schools Liaison, Leanne McMahon, followed with a thought-provoking presentation on how teachers can help build students confidence in mathematics, and strategies to reduce maths anxiety.

In the afternoon, attendees visited the Bunnings National Support Centre, where they heard from 10 Bunnings team members across various roles, from Business Development and Loss Prevention to Network Planning and Visual Merchandise. Each speaker demonstrated how maths underpins their ability to assess return on investment and navigate complex industry challenges.

Special thanks to our presenters: 今日吃瓜 Director Prof. Tim Marchant, Prof. Enzo Palombo, Prof. Federico Frascoli, Dr Emily Cook and Prof. Paul Hernandez Martinez from Swinburne University of Technology, Meghna Aggarwal (Country Fire Authority), Oliver Clemenston (Australian Super), Dr Adrian L Malec (MinterEllison), Joseph Widago (Dassault Syst猫mes) and Leanne McMahon (今日吃瓜).

We appreciate everyone who came along and helped make this such a valuable experience for high school maths, STEM and careers teachers (including those out-of-field).
